The American League All-Stars

The All-Star game is a yearly showcase of the best players in baseball, and 2008 is no exception.  This year boasts some of the greatest talent ever to play on the fields of the major leagues, and many of the best players made their way onto the All-Star roster.  The American League team, in particular, is an excellent mix of talented rookies as well as seasoned veterans to the contest.  Boston skipper Terry Francona manages the 2008 AL team, having won the 2007 World Series against the Colorado Rockies.

It comes as a surprise to no one that the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are well-represented in 2008.  The Red Sox, led by veteran Manny Ramirez in his twelfth appearance, include Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, and closer Jonathan Papelbon among the starters; David Ortiz was voted to the team, but his wrist surgery precluded him from playing.  Boston also sent J.D. Drew and Jason Varitek as reserves.  Twelve-time All-Star Alex Rodriguez represents the Yankees, with teammates Derek Jeter and the legendary Mariano Rivera also appearing.

Other notable American League players returning to the All-Star game this year are Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, making his eighth visit to the big show; pitcher Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays in his fifth appearance; and Rangers shortstop Michael Young, five-time All-Star.  Twins catcher Joe Mauer and Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton round out the starting squad, with the Rangers designated hitter Milton Bradley stepping in for the injured David Ortiz.
