This year's All-Star squad representing the National League is a diverse mix of players from every corner of the country. Managed by Clint Hurdle after his team's World Series appearance in 2007, the team features some of the most talented defensive players in the league. The NL team features more relative rookies compared to the AL roster, with many players on their first or second visit to the All-Star Game.
The Cubs are well-represented in 2008, featuring no fewer than seven members in the main lineup: outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome, catcher Geovany Soto, and pitchers Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Kerry Wood, and Carlos Zambrano. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez also made the team as a reserve. Lance Berkman from the Astros, Chase Utley from the Phillies, Chipper Jones from the Braves, and shortstop Hanley Ramirez from the Marlins make up the infield, with Ryan Braun from the Brewers joining the two Cubs in the outfield. Veteran first baseman Albert Pujols, in his seventh appearance, made the reserve squad.
The NL pitching squad is headed up by veteran Ben Sheets of the Milwaukee Brewers, and also features Billy Wagner of the Mets, making his sixth All-Star appearance. The leader in the NL voting this year was Chase Utley (with nearly four million ballots); the Monster All-Star Final Vote winner this year was Milwaukee outfielder Corey Hart, narrowly beating out Mets third baseman David Wright in one of the highest voting turnouts ever for a final roster spot.
