March 24. Did you think that a man with the drive that Schilling has (remember the bloody sock in the 2004 World Series) would simply fade away? You're right, he won't. He's already busy. He had these big plans underway when he announced his retirement yesterday. Remember that his retirement announcement was on a 38pitches.com website. That's it, but it's 38 Studios - an online game that has a fantasy theme. In a January 2008 interview he had already mentioned his post-baseball commitment to 38 Studios. "This is my life after baseball," he said, "After baseball I will do nothing but be a father, husband and run this company." The company is privately funded by Schilling and another angel investor.
Curt Schilling has been a long time gaming enthusiast. This new
fantasy game has the comic book creator Todd McFarlane and the best
selling fantasy author R. A. Salvatore.
The company has a lot of work to do in order to break through the already saturated fantasy gaming market. There is Activision Blizzard ("World of Warcraft"), Electronic Arts ("Warhammer" and an upcoming "Star Wars" game) and the gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter.
Pachter believes that 38 Studios will be successful, "They're looking at a half-million or a million players, and I think they can achieve that," he said, "Schilling has enough star power to attract media attention and Salvatore has enough skill to write a compelling story. All they have to do is make a good game."
