Yes, we are close to first pitch.  Less than a week away.  I love the sound of that, don't you? These stories are from 3/31/09.

TIGERS RELEASE SHEFFIELD - It's a shocker but the Tigers released Sheffield as their DH today.  Yes, they will eat his $14 Million salary.  It's only money, isn't it? He's feeling good too.  His shoulder has been in good shape this spring.  The Tiger Manager, Jim Leland called Sheffield into his office this morning and gave him the news. He did fine for the Tigers last year - he played in 114 games last season with a ..25 batting average.  He hit  19 home runs and 57 RBIs.  When he came in this morning, he said that the staff was looking at him funny so he was wondering if something was going on.  The really haven't released any more information about the release.  When I hear more, I'll pass it on. Oh well.  I'm sure the Cardinal manager, Tony LaRussa knows the beef.  He's Leland's good friend. We'll hear sooner or later, I guess.

CHIPPER & BRAVES AGREE ON CONTRACT EXTENSION - The Braves will do this long-term Brave right (remember the Smoltz deal earlier this year?).  Chipper, who is almost 37,  and the Braves agreed on an extension for three more years with a vested option for another year.  Looks like he will retire as a Brave.  Good job Atlanta. They haven't released any financial information on the contract, but rumors are that it is in the area of a $40 Million contract.  He's worth it.  He's as good as the others getting that kind of money.  The Atlanta general manager Frank Wren said about the deal "Chipper has been an outstanding performer for our club for a long time and is still a key part of our team."

HOFFMAN ON THE BREWERS' DL - Hoffman has an oblique muscle that is giving him trouble, so he finds himself on the DL to start out the new season.  Not good for the Brewers.  Their plan right now is to try to bring him back for the game on April 11 against the Chicago Cubs.  That should be good - you know how the Brewers and the Cubs like to battle.  It's almost like the Cardinals and the Cubs.  I said ALMOST. OK? Hoffman is a future Hall of Famer as a closer w/the Brewers.  He's pretty hot.  I think he should be w/the Cardinals. OK I'll stop.  We have  Perez. His rehabs should start April 9.  He's pretty frustrated with it being so close to opening day, but doesn't believe is making this probable injury a lot worse.
