Cub/Cardinal Baseball. We beat the Cubbies last night 2-1 and pushed them out of second place. Yea! We are now two behind the first place Brewers.
Chris Carpenter looked like Chris Carpenter. He was magnificant. Manager, Tony LaRussa, said about Carpenter's performance last night, "It's not surprising. It is just amazing and impressive to be able to shut the Cubs out for five innings." Carpenter had a shutout going until the bullpen took over in the sixth inning. He has not yet allowed an unearned run this season. Cub first baseman, Derrick Lee, said after the game, "Carpenter - that's the nastiest pitcher I have faced all year." Five shutout innings with only three hits and had four strikeouts. He threw 92 pitches and his fastballs reached a speed of 90 mph. What a pitcher - he's a joy to watch on the mound. No, I'm not biased either. Really.
CHICAGO WHITE SOX - There are rumors that San Diego Padre Jake Peavy will be traded to the Padres for four players. Peavy said of the possibility. "Something to think about." He admittted that he had reservations about pitching for the volitile White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. He declined to comment further about the trade.
TAMPA BAY RAYS - Joe Madden and the Rays have agreed to a three-year contract extension for him to continue as manager. Madden is the fourth manager for Tampa Bay.
