Derek Jeter Discusses his Contract, continued:
This is fine with Jeter (not negotiating his contract during the season). He knew about this policy when he signed on with the Yankees. He said". . .They have the right to do whatever they want." Jeter just wants to do his best for his team. He has silenced critics recently that have wondered if he will slow down now and possibly become a designated hitter or move to the outfield. That is not happening. He will remain a mainstay for the club and stay in his position at shortstop.
Reporters ask Jeter what he thinks about free agency. He said, "I have never been a free agent. I have never wanted to be a free agent. That's why I signed such a long deal. I felt the longer the better." Derek Jeter is a Yankee - end of story.
He told reporters Wednesday, that out of respect for his teammates and the Yankees, Wednesday would be the last time this season that he would talk about his contract. They will have to wait until next year. He said, "I think it's unfair to be talking about myself when we are trying to win."
That's why Jeter is the Yankee's Captain.
