JP Has a Great Day for Angels

PINIERO PITCHES FIRST AT-BAT IN SPRING TRAINING

Joel Piniero is new to the Angels this season.  He signed a two-year contract with them during the offseason.

He's new on the club and he's already become one of their favorites. You do that when you have a no-hitter go until the 6th inning. On Monday Piniero did that in their Spring Training game. He's a new favorite with his teammates.

The hitless innings helped the Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2.  Piniero was nonscelant about his day, "Ah, they hit some balls hard right at guys.  The defense makes the plays.  I trust my defense and those guys came through for me."  That's right Joel, but take a little bit of the credit.

His manager was excited about the outing.  Mike Scioscia said,  "That was impressive.  he accomplished everything he set out to do.  He got deep in the game. He got his sinkerball going."

That sinkerball is by far his best pitch. Piniero did a great job in our rotation last year.  He was a 15-game winner for our Cardinals.

Another former Cardinal helped out in this big game.  Rick Ankiel hit a nice 6th inning double.  It's fun to watch former teammates help each other like that.

Pinierio has a couple beliefs that he thinks will help the Angels this season.  One affects him. It is important to "keep the ball on the ground."  The sinkerball does that.  Second is their health.  He hopes the team keeps healthy and "ready to go."

Good luck Piniero!
